I always thought that the Worcestershire opener Daryl Mitchell (scorer of a hundred in each innings in that match against Gloucestershire last week) was South African. Or perhaps Australian.
I think it’s his name. You don’t get many Daryls around this neck of the wood. In fact you don’t get many Daryls in any neck of the woods - Daryl Cullinan, one of the guys from Hall And Oates, er, that’s it.
On learning of his elevation to the Worcestershire captaincy following Vikram Solanki’s resignation earlier today, I did a spot of research and I know now I was completely wrong. Daryl Mitchell is actually from Badsey…in Worcestershire!
Down in Gloucestershire we currently struggle to field anyone born within the county boundaries, so it’s excellent to see our northern neighbour giving their top job to a homegrown player.
If he lasts half as long as Vikram Solanki, he’ll be doing very well.
